The potential for disaster seems to exist in everything I devote even a split second to thinking about.
Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth, “you owe me.” Look what happens with a love like that, it lights the whole sky. - Hafiz, a Persian poet of the 1300s

Watching Real Housewives of Atlanta. One of the broads is getting married. Her mom isn’t down with it for whatever reason, and in trying to explain why, she starts with, “just be the strong, beautiful, black woman you are,” at which point, I tuned out. Why are black people so obsessed with being black? I mean, clearly, anybody with eyeballs can see that you’re black. Thank you. If a white person was talking to a black person, they would never say that. If my mom was the type to give prep talks, she’d never say shit like that… Of course, that’s probably because by the time she listed all my ethnicities, she’d probably have forgotten the point of the pep talk.
